02-07-17 The Keys to the Mysteries
  With: Michael van Buren
The Mysteries were the most sacred and secret teachings and practices in many of the world religions, in which the aspirant not only learnt, but more importantly, experienced for themselves their Divine centre. It meant learning about how the universe was constructed, what is a human being, and through symbols and actions (rituals) begun to experience the reality of "as above, so below", the mystical union, knowing, or gnosis. The talk will explore simply some of these principles of the spiritual life and, briefly, their application in a variety of modern reflections of the Mysteries

04-06-17 Cycles of Eternity
  With: Tim Wyatt
Getting to grips with eternity and understanding its interlocking laws can be a tough old business. But don't worry there is a solution both for newcomers and seasoned practitioners of the Ageless Wisdom teachings. Author and ex journalist Tim Wyatt has condensed the essential ingredients of Theosophy into an internationally-acclaimed book Cycles Of Eternity. In this talk he will be exploring how the many cycles of life, some lasting fractions of a second and others trillions of years are crucial to the evolution of the cosmos and ourselves as members of the human project. Everything from a sub-atomic particle to a galaxy mirrors this pattern. Nothing escapes its grip

07-10-16 An Introduction to the Ancient Theosophy of Plotinus
  With: David Nieuwjaers

At the beginning of her book The Key to Theosophy H.P.Blavatsky explains that the origin of western theosophy and mysticism lies in the Neoplatonic school founded in Alexandria by Ammonius Saccas and his leading disciple Plotinus (A.D. 204-270). Whereas Ammonius wrote nothing and very little is known about him and his teaching, Plotinus left us a unique treasury of fifty-four treatises arranged by his disciple Porphyry into six groups of nine each (Greek: ennea), thus giving the title Enneadsto the whole collection. In these treatises the Egyptian sage invites us, through metaphysical meditation and practicing virtue, to reach the divine Intellect, contemplate the beauty of Ideal-Forms, and to return to the One, which is the ultimate goal of true philosophy. One of the functions of the Enneadsis to be a spiritual guide to this transformative journey of the soul, ascending from the dark cave of phenomena to the immortal realm of archetypal reality of which the world constitutes a partial image. Thus, following Pythagoras and Plato, Plotinus conceived philosophy as a preparation for death and a way of rebirth, not the dry rationalistic exercise it has become in our modern age of information.

Plotinus had a major influence on the mystical dimensions of Christianity as well as on Jewish and Islamic thought. There is no doubt that contemplating his works enables us to better understand our spiritual heritage that speaks directly to the religious and cultural crises of our modern world. During this weekend we will explore what the ancient philosophy of Plotinus can teach us today, drawing inspiration from some of the most important and the most beautiful and inspiring selections from the Enneads

16-06-16 The Occult Nature of Friendship
  With: Ariadne Pascalidi
For Plato the ultimate principle of Friendship is the Good, which is congenial to everyone. Disciples, transcending their personalities, can access Friendship as souls evolving with the Ideas beyond the illusions of the senses. They find in their friends the only Friend and help each other to discover it through the discourses of the Divine Wisdom. Philia leads to Philanthropia, complete unselfishness and unity of all beings. Dia-logos, or Dialogue, is essential to the treading of the Path as an individual and as a collect effort. The history of the Modern Theosophical Movement reveals the value of Nucleus-making Friendships between the Founders

THE NUCLEUS OF UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD AND THE TEACHINGS OF PLATO PART 2

'Plato could not accept a philosophy destitute of spiritual aspirations; the two were at one with him. For the old Grecian sage there was a single object of attainment REAL KNOWLEDGE. He considered those only to be genuine philosophers, or students of truth, who possess the knowledge of the really existing, in opposition to the mere seeming of the always existing, in opposition to the transitory..'H P Blavatsky writing in Isis Unveiled

THE SECRET DOCTRINE

With: Janet Hoult and Tony Maddock

"The Secret Doctrine is the accumulated Wisdom of the Ages, and its cosmogony alone is the most stupendous and elaborate system... But such is the mysterious power of Occult symbolism, that the facts which have actually occupied countless generations of initiated seers and prophets to marshal, to set down and explain, in the bewildering series of evolutionary progress, are all recorded on a few pages of geometrical signs and glyphs. The flashing gaze of those seers has penetrated into the very kernel of matter, and recorded the soul of things there, where an ordinary profane, however learned, would have perceived but the external work of form." The Secret Doctrine vol1 p 272.

The modern theosophical movement is based upon the life-work of H P Blavatsky, her association with those Adept Teachers she referred to as her Masters, and the promotion of that body of knowledge given by them through her in her many writings, principally 'The Secret Doctrine.' We invite all students of the Wisdom Tradition, new and old, to join us in this day of group study and exploration, with Madame Blavatskys classic work as our guide

THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY. WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE?

  With: Various Speakers
The Theosophical Society is an International Spiritual Movement with its centre at Adyar, Chennai, India. Our movement was founded in 1875, after H P Blavatsky had been given the task of promoting the teachings of the Ancient Wisdom Tradition to the modern world by her own teachers, often referred to as Masters or Mahatmas. Their aim was “to reconcile all religions, sects and nations under a common system of ethics, based on eternal verities. (‘The Key to Theosophy’ by H P Blavatsky.) Today we welcome all who are interested in exploring and celebrating this tradition to join us in a day which outlines our tradition. There will be short talks, audio-visual presentations, displays, introductions to the work that we do and opportunities to ask questions about the work and history of the Theosophical Society
