Fire in the Head organises a number of different courses and retreats for creative writing. New one day courses in creative and therapeutic/bardic-type work are also planned next year (2009) in the Totnes area. You'll find here courses for novices and experienced writers; for poets and novelists; for people interested in land, in reflection, in renewal, in personal history and personal development, and in creative 'time out''. Be warned - people tend to come back, over and over.

Writing the Bright Moment

Cevennes, France

Facilitator: Roselle

This is a retreat week to quicken the heart, fire the imagination and enliven the senses. Through lively discussion, shared silence, poetry and story, slow walking, time outdoors, mindfulness exercises and creative prompts we will find new ways of being in and writing from each moment - effortlessly.

Expect a friendly group, a deepening of your sense of connectedness, a great deal of sometimes surprising writing (prose & poetry), a slowing down, some play, a lot of laughter, and an opening of your imagination and your heart. And warmth seasonal and human.

This retreat will focus on developing our writing at the same time as deepening our sense of relationship to the world around us, in this moment - the only one we ever have

The Lands Wild Magic

West Cornwall

Facilitator: Roselle
Together we’ll explore on foot the local ancient stone circles, holed stones and alignments, significant sites, holy wells, coastpath and coves (Boswedden House is very close to the sea), and their stories, after starting each day with some quiet writing and the inspiration of some poetry or prose in relation to place. We might see seals and dolphins; we’ll visit the Mermaid of Zennor

04-04-17 Islands of the Heart Creative Writing Retreat

Isle of Iona

Facilitator: Roselle

An island is both a physical point in space and metaphorically a place where we might bring ourselves home. Iona is one of those places where, as the Celts describe it, the veil is thin. It has probably been a place of pilgrimage for 1000s of years; it was a Druidic teaching centre before the arrival of Celtic Christianity.

Here, surrounded by the seas that both connect us and keep us apart, is a good place to start the quest for the heart.

For nine years I led a weeklong retreat on Iona with my friend, fellow author and poet Kenneth Steven. The many people who have attended, some of whom return every year, know what a unique, and frequently life-changing, experience these days offer (in 2016 there will be 6 days, 7 nights).

Starting January The Wellkeepers - The story of your life: a journey to wholeness
  Facilitator: Roselle

Myth can show us the way forward, even as it records a time of loss & destruction. Through the lens of archetypal psychology & myth, especially the Grail legends, we will explore a different way to be alive, with our unique gifts, in the world: a conscious way that can heal our own wounds & contribute something positive, healing, to the web of being in which we all exist.

As we explore the 8 mythic phases (as I wrote of it in my book mentioned below, further adapted for this century and its troubles) of this journey in relation to our own lives, we will each also be writing, quite literally, the book of our individual life. Call it narrative eco-therapy, personal mythology, or soulwork. Or all three & more

Horse Medicine

Exmoor

Facilitator: Roselle
The weekend, which is non-residential, unfolds through ideas and writing in relation to animal archetypes, and an exploration of the way in which animals in general and horses in particular are or have been part of our individual and collective lives and the gifts they’ve brought us, through to hands-on experience with Cait's horses - this is often a profoundly healing experience. We'll continue the exploration of horse spirit medicine on the Sunday morning

Buckland on Moor Facilitator: Roselle
Roselle's theme for this workshop is 'Leaps, Lightning Bolts and Bridges'. She says, Some poems have that extra factor, draw surprise and recognition from a reader or listener. What is it that offers a little gap for something invisible to leap, ignite and inspire? We'll be looking at titles, opening and closing lines and reordering, as well as lateral approaches, to help create the spark plug effect
